| The Pilates Method of body
conditioning
The
Pilates (pronounced puh-LAH-teez) Method of body conditioning
is different than any other exercise program. If you would like
a routine that you look forward to, which leaves you refreshed
and alert with a feeling of physical and mental well-being, the
Pilates method is for you.
Developed in the 1920s by the legendary physical trainer Joseph
H. Pilates, The Pilates Method is an exercise system focused on
improving flexibility and strength for the total body without
building bulk. The Pilates method has been used by many dancers,
and in fact the legendary dancers Martha Graham and George Balanchine
were among the first to use the Pilates method.
The Pilates Method is a series of controlled movements designed
to engage both body and mind, supervised by extensively trained
teachers.
Benefits of the Pilates Method
Anyone can benefit from The Pilates Method of body conditioning.
It promotes physical harmony and balance for people of all ages
and physical conditions while providing a refreshing and energizing
workout.
Tailored to your needs
Because conditioning sessions are done one-to-one with a certified
teacher or in closely supervised small groups, each session is
tailored to your specific needs. It doesn't matter whether you're
an office worker
who sits all day or a super-active fitness enthusiast - the Pilates
method can be your primary body conditioning and injury prevention
program.
Rehabilitative benefits
Many physical therapists, chiropractors and orthopedists have
recently discovered that The Pilates Method of body conditioning
can be an excellent part of a rehabilitation progra. It can be
integrated into exercise and physical therapy programs designed
to speed recovery of soft tissue injuries.
Safe during and after pregnancy
There is no other time when fitness is more important, and The
Pilates Method is an excellent choice for both during and after
pregnancy. In addition to outstanding body conditioning, the Pilates
method can help pregnant women learn proper breathing and body
alignment, improve concentration, and recover body shape and tone
after pregnancy.
How the Pilates method is different
- Fewer, more
precise movements
Many exercise methods require many, many repetitions of each
exercise. The Pilates method uses fewer movements, but requires
that each movement is more precise and is done with proper control
and form.
- Better mind-muscle coordination
Because your mind is required to engage with your body to perform
the movements correctly, you experience a new awareness of muscle
function and control.
- Safety and support for the body's
"powerhouse" muscles
The abdomen, lower back, and buttocks are supported and strengthened,
enabling the rest of the body to move freely.
- Trained, certified instructors
To provide safe and effective conditioning for our clients,
instruction is given only by teachers who complete a rigorous
certification program. The certification program has been continued
by Pilates Inc.'s Master Teachers, who follow the Authentic
teachings of Joseph Pilates.
